Suddenly the Sun Set

Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau

1 May – 16 August 2015

The exhibition huber.huber. Suddenly the Sun Set is part of the cantonal anniversary year commemorating "1415: The Swiss Confederates Are Coming!" The artist duo huber.huber (Markus and Reto Huber) uses film, photography, and historical artefacts to examine the dark sides of history in subtle and multi-layered ways.

1415 was a fateful year for the Canton of Aargau: the Swiss Confederates conquered large parts of present-day Aargau, thereby putting an end to the long years of Habsburg rule and ringing in a new political and cultural era. In 2015 the canton commemorates this turning point in its history by offering a varied educational programme.

To mark the occasion, the Aargauer Kunsthaus is presenting the exhibition huber.huber. Suddenly the Sun Set. As the title suggests, the exhibitions also points out the dark sides of the conquest. For example, the Confederates brought neither neutrality nor democracy to the people living in the Aargau territories: the latter remained subjects under the new rule.
Having delved into the depots and archives of the Canton of Aargau for their research, the artists Markus and Reto Huber frame their personal take on the events of 1415 based on historical facts and artefacts. The exhibition combines film, photography, and historical object in an overarching installation that reflects on the conflicts and consequences of the war of 1415, as well as on the particular patterns that are responsible for the recurrence of military conflicts to the present day. The causes of the war of 1415 — power, money, territorial claims, and religion — are still the most common catalysts of armed conflicts today.

The exhibition focuses on the protagonist of war: man as an individual, and man as perpetrator and victim. The hand plays a special role as the embodiment of man’s uniqueness. In various visualisations we are confronted with the hand’s power to heal, to protect, and to comfort, as well as its ability to injure.

huber.huber Born as twins (b. 1975) and raised in Uetikon (Canton of Zurich), Markus and Reto Huber received their training at the Zurich University of the Arts from 2002 until 2005. Ever since graduating, they have been active as the artist collective huber.huber. For their work they draw on a wide range of art forms from object art, installation, video, and photography to painting and drawing. The strategies of collecting and isolating materials from their context and assembling and creating new contexts are characteristic of their artistic practice.

Und plötzlich ging die Sonne unter

Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau

1. Mai – 16. August 2015
